Ventura County probate isn’t heard in Ventura. Every probate, trust, conservatorship, and guardianship matter in the county is filed and heard at the Juvenile and Probate Courthouse in Oxnard, and hearings are typically set in Courtroom J6. People drive to the Hall of Justice on Victoria Avenue and find they’re in the wrong building.
The calendar
The court runs probate on a fixed weekly schedule, and knowing it tells you how long you’ll wait for a hearing date.
Wills, estates, and trusts:
- Motions and miscellaneous petitions: Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9:00 a.m.
- New probate estate petitions: Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.
Conservatorships and guardianships with an estate:
- Motions and miscellaneous petitions: Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m.
- Care plans, inventory and appraisal, annual and biennial status reports: Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.
- Petitions for appointment of conservator or guardian: Fridays at 9:00 a.m. only
Most calendars have limits on how many matters get set per day. When a calendar fills, you take the next available date, which is why a petition filed in the same week as someone else’s can end up a month behind it.
Probate notes, and why you read them before you drive
Ventura County publishes probate notes ahead of the hearing, in the same place as tentative rulings on the court’s online services page. The notes tell you what the examiner found wrong with your petition.
Read them. A defect in the notes usually means the matter gets continued rather than granted, and a continuance costs weeks. Most defects are fixable before the hearing if you see them in time: a missing proof of service, a bond amount that doesn’t match the inventory, a notice that went to the wrong address, a will that was never lodged.
This is the single highest-value habit for anyone handling a Ventura County probate without a lawyer. The information is published and free, and it’s the difference between one hearing and three.
Lodging the will
The clerk’s office accepts a will after the person who wrote it has died. There’s a $50 fee to lodge it. This is separate from filing a petition for probate, and it’s a step people skip.
Clerk’s office hours at the Juvenile and Probate Courthouse are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., except holidays.
Filing fees
The filing fee for a petition for probate is set on the court’s published fee schedule rather than by the probate court itself, and it changes. Check the current schedule on the court’s site instead of relying on a figure from a blog post, including this one.

Remote appearances
Remote appearance is available for identified proceedings, and participants have to comply with California Rules of Court, rule 3.672. The court lists which proceedings qualify on its remote appearances page.
For an out-of-county or out-of-state executor this matters. It’s often the difference between administering the estate yourself and declining to serve.
What the local process doesn’t change
Ventura County sets the calendar and the local procedure. It doesn’t change the statutory math. Compensation for the personal representative and the attorney still runs on the schedule in Prob. Code § 10800 and § 10810: 4% of the first $100,000, 3% of the next $100,000, 2% of the next $800,000. Both fees are calculated on gross value without deducting the mortgage.
The four-month creditor claim window runs from the issuance of letters regardless of county. Twelve to eighteen months remains the realistic timeline for an uncontested administration.
Before you file
Two questions are worth answering first, because both can remove the need for a probate entirely. Whether the estate qualifies for the § 13100 small estate affidavit, currently available where the gross estate is under $208,850 with a 40-day wait. And whether property that should have been in a trust can be brought in by a Heggstad petition under § 850 instead of going through full administration.
