Top Estate Planning Attorneys in Moorpark, CA (2026)

Moorpark has about 37,000 residents, a median home value of roughly $800,000, and one of the highest median household incomes in Ventura County at around $149,000. It also has a look and feel that sets it apart from its neighbors: horse properties on the eastern edge of town, citrus and avocado ranches that have been in families for generations, and lots large enough that “the house” is only part of what gets passed down.

That combination creates estate planning problems that a standard trust template doesn’t anticipate. Divisible agricultural land raises questions a subdivided suburban lot never does: can the parcel actually be split among siblings without triggering new permitting requirements, does the property sit under a Williamson Act contract that restricts its use and complicates a sale, and who inherits the water rights or easements that make the ranch or the horse property functional in the first place.

Below are the attorneys who serve Moorpark families, with verifiable credentials. This is not a ranking. It is a starting point for doing your own homework, and it comes with an honest caveat: Moorpark has very few estate planning attorneys in town.

How to vet an estate planning attorney

The California State Bar certifies attorneys as Legal Specialists in Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law. Fewer than 1% of California attorneys hold this credential. It requires passing a written exam, demonstrating substantial experience, and submitting to peer review. You can verify any attorney’s status at calbar.ca.gov.

Beyond certification, look for:

  • A practice focused on estate planning, not a general practice that lists trusts as one of thirty other services.
  • Direct access to the attorney, not a paralegal-driven mill that hands you a binder.
  • Flat, disclosed fees. If an attorney won’t tell you the cost before you sign, that tells you something.
  • Familiarity with Ventura County probate procedures and, for Moorpark families with agricultural or equestrian property, familiarity with how land-use restrictions affect a trust and a probate estate differently. Moorpark matters are heard at the Ventura County Superior Court, Juvenile and Probate Division, 4353 E. Vineyard Avenue in Oxnard, not at any courthouse in Moorpark itself.

What Moorpark families actually deal with

Why so few attorneys practice here

Moorpark is honestly underserved. There is essentially one law office physically located in town that touches estate planning, and it’s a general practice firm with more than 30 listed practice areas, not a firm built around trusts and probate. Most Moorpark families who want a practice limited to estate planning end up driving to Camarillo, Thousand Oaks, or Newbury Park, all within 15 to 20 minutes. That’s not unusual for a city Moorpark’s size, but it means the “just find someone local” approach doesn’t really work here. Plan on a short drive regardless of who you choose.

Agricultural land, Williamson Act contracts, and water rights

Moorpark still has working citrus and avocado ranches, and a fair number of horse properties with acreage attached. When that kind of property passes to the next generation, three issues come up that a standard residential estate plan doesn’t address:

Divisibility. Ag parcels are often large enough that siblings assume they can simply split the land three or four ways. Zoning, minimum parcel size requirements, and access easements frequently make that harder than it sounds, and the answer needs to be worked out before it’s written into a trust, not after a parent has died.

Williamson Act contracts. Land enrolled under the California Land Conservation Act (the Williamson Act) gets a reduced property tax assessment in exchange for restrictions on how the land can be used and developed. Those restrictions run with the land and bind whoever inherits it. An heir who wants to develop or subdivide a Williamson Act parcel may face a multi-year non-renewal process, or significant cancellation fees, before the restriction lifts.

Water rights and easements. A horse property or ranch is often only functional because of an appurtenant water right, a shared well agreement, or an access easement across a neighbor’s land. Those arrangements are rarely explicit in a deed and can get lost entirely if a trust doesn’t specifically identify and transfer them along with the real property.

The probate math on a Moorpark home

Probate fees in California are set by statute (Probate Code §§ 10810 and 10800), calculated on the gross value of the estate. On a Moorpark home at the median value of roughly $800,000, the statutory fee works out to about $19,000 for the attorney and $19,000 for the executor, roughly $38,000 total, before appraisal costs, court fees, or extraordinary compensation for handling agricultural or equestrian property, which frequently requires exactly that.

A funded living trust avoids the process. For families with ranch or horse property, it also avoids the delay of probate court oversight during a sale or land-use decision that can’t wait a year.

Where Moorpark probate is heard

Moorpark matters are filed at the Ventura County Superior Court, Juvenile and Probate Division, 4353 E. Vineyard Avenue, Oxnard, CA 93036, not at any courthouse in Moorpark. Your attorney should know this without being told.
